A backtest is a hypothesis, not a promise. But an untested strategy is just a guess with confidence. The good news: Indian traders now have excellent tools at every skill level.
No-code platforms
StockMock — options strategy backtester (straddles, strangles, iron condors); free with limits. AlgoTest — options and futures backtesting plus deployment, with powerful filters. Opstra (DefineEdge) — free backtests of simple option strategies plus a good option-chain explorer. Sensibull — strategy simulation, better for planning than deep backtests. Quantman and TradeTron — paid, deploy-ready builders for those going further.
For coders
Python + NSE data with Pandas gives total flexibility. Backtrader adds indicators and strategy logic on top. Amibroker + AFL remains a workhorse for price-action systems (with paid data feeds). TradingView Pine is handy for equity logic. QuantConnect and BlueShift offer institutional-grade engines — BlueShift with built-in Indian data.
Judge results with the right metrics
Win ratio alone lies — a strategy can win 80% of the time and still lose money if the rare losses are huge. Look at the full picture: expectancy (average result per trade after wins and losses), max loss versus average profit (one bad week should not erase months), and the depth and frequency of losing streaks. A strategy you cannot emotionally survive is not a strategy you will follow.
The four silent killers of backtests
Survivorship bias — testing only on stocks that still exist today. Look-ahead bias — using information the strategy could not have known at the time. Ignored costs — brokerage, slippage and impact costs that quietly eat thin edges. Overfitting — torturing parameters until the past confesses. The antidote to all four: keep rules simple, test out-of-sample, and forward-test in live conditions with small size before committing real capital.
