How to Pick Quality Stocks: A Practical Checklist

By Dinesh Kumar · Adapted from my session “Framework for Consistent Wealth Creation” at an investor meet

Stock picking sounds like an art. Most of it is hygiene. Before any story convinces you — a hot sector, a charismatic founder, a friend’s tip — the numbers must pass a gate. Here is the gate I use.

The quantitative gate

  • Growth: revenue and profit growing at 12–15%+ CAGR over 5–10 years — not one lucky year.
  • Profitability: ROCE and ROE above 15%. Capital should earn its keep.
  • Balance sheet: debt-to-equity below 0.3. Low debt buys survival in bad cycles.
  • Cash: operating cash flow positive and consistent. Profits are an opinion; cash is a fact.
  • Ownership: promoter holding above 50% with zero pledging. Owners should have skin in the game, not loans against it.
  • Valuation: a sensible P/E and PEG. A great company at a silly price is a poor investment.
  • Visibility: earnings that are stable or improving, not guesswork.

The qualitative gate

Numbers qualify a company; these decide it. Is it a top-3 player in its segment? Is there a durable moat — brand, distribution, switching costs — that rivals cannot copy quickly? And is management clean and transparent, with a track record you can verify?

Red flags that override everything

High and rising debt. Consistently negative cash flow. Declining promoter holding or growing pledges. Corporate-governance noise. Growth projections that sound like fantasy. Any one of these is reason enough to walk away — there are always other stocks.

Run it in one click

On the free screener at Screener.in, this query applies most of the gate instantly:

Sales growth 5Years > 12 AND Profit growth 5Years > 12 AND Return on capital employed > 15 AND Return on equity > 15 AND Debt to equity < 0.3 AND Market Capitalization > 1000 AND Promoter holding > 50 AND Pledged percentage = 0 AND Price to Earning < 40 AND PEG ratio < 2

Tickertape, Trendlyne, Moneycontrol and Morningstar help with peer comparison. But remember: a screener only filters out. Conviction comes from reading annual reports, investor presentations and concall transcripts — from understanding how the business actually makes money.
